What Parents Fail To Understand.

Altruism is the principle or practice of unselfish concern for or devotion to the welfare of others. I can’t think of a better term to associate with parents. Everything they do is for the sake of their children. Their entire happiness revolves around their children and making sure that they are as happy as possible disregarding their own comfort. We’re always told that too much of anything is bad. I can’t help but concur with it. It’s a fine line between being caring and being possessive, protecting and suffocating, guiding and demanding. More often than not parents fail to differentiate between these. They fail to realise that their children grow up and stop being children. And that they can make their own decisions and at times it will be different. Expecting them to follow whatever you say when they’re fully grown adults with their own thoughts is not going to end up well.  From education to marriage, parents have a lot more say than they should in my opinion. I don’t remember ...

In defence of Feminism.

Over the years I've seen various opinions on what people think of Feminism. I want to share my thoughts on the feminist movement and why I believe it's absolutely required even today.  Let's start with the definition. Feminism at its core is the belief that men and women should be given equal rights and opportunities. Most of the time Feminism revolves around empowering women because throughout history, it was women who didn't have the freedom to do what they wanted. Hardly controversial statements. Why is there so much hate towards it though? Why do people feel embarrassed to even associate themselves with this let alone call themselves a Feminist?  I think there is a loud minority whose views on this issue are extremely radicalized and that doesn't sit right with a lot of people. Calling all men trash or pigs isn't going to help the cause. The false accusations are a problem as well. Even a single false accusation is enough for someone to lose his entire caree...

How the fuck did we get here?

I was talking to my grandma about what life was like a few decades ago. We were specifically talking about marriages. They were a celebration. You'd have your closest relatives arrive at your house a month before the wedding and the preparations begin. The lead up to the marriage was some of the best parts according to her. All the people you love gathering at your house, helping you prepare for the big event and having a good time. Good vibes all around. This is nothing like the experiences I've had. Your best friends not being able to make it because of work. Your cousins not being able to make it because they have exams. Your aunt and uncle not being able to make it because they live in another country. Hell, the bride and groom themselves have to struggle to make themselves available for a week and head back to you guessed it. Work. How the fuck did we get here ? Somewhere along the line we seem to have messed up. Marriage is just one of the examples which comes to mind. Ho...

The charm of Kdramas.

Over the last couple of years, my interest has massively shifted towards reading books rather than watching TV shows or movies. A large part of it has to do with me being saturated with the content I was consuming and also the scarcity of good shows. It was the same regurgitated garbage over and over again. That’s when I turned to books. As enjoyable as reading is, you need a break from it every now and then. I had finished reading ASOIAF and Wheel of Time back to back in 12 months and needed to do something else. That’s when I came across a show called Reply 1988. It was my introduction to Kdramas and boy oh boy was it an incredible show. After realising just how good Kdramas can be, I decided to watch more of it and am yet to be disappointed. Every show I’ve watched so far has been satisfying to say the least although none have come close to reaching the heights of Reply 1988. It’s by far one of the best shows I’ve watched and probably the only show(Arcane as well but it’s not finish...

The weight of expectations.

It was another parents' teachers meet. I was not looking forward to it. I knew I hadn't made the top 10. I had missed out by 1 mark. That meant my name would not be on the board. What followed was one of the most significant moments of my life. It shaped the way I looked at things for a very long time. Listening to my mom talk with my teacher and expressing her disappointment was not a pleasant experience. I couldn’t hold myself. I broke down while the discussion was happening. And all my mom told me was to stop it and that I was embarrassing her with everyone else watching. I love my mom and she’s pampered me to no end but there have been moments where I wished she did something different.  Deep down I knew I could never match her expectations. In the end, that was what I was afraid of the most. I was satisfied with my marks. To an extent. But I knew I could never reach the heights which my brother did. It wasn’t just my mom. I didn’t want to let anyone down. I felt the same w...

I’m here for you

“I’m here for you.”, “My DMs are open.”, “Feel free to talk to me.” I’m sure most of us have come across people posting some variation of the above phrases. What does it mean to be there for someone ? What can one do to help someone going through a difficult time ? I don’t know. I am not questioning the sincerity of the above phrases. People genuinely want to help but don’t know how. The least we can do is listen to someone, right ? And we want to tell everyone that it’s okay. You don’t have to go through this alone. I’m here for you. You can always talk to me. We want to comfort them to the best of our abilities.  What if they did talk to us and we brushed it aside ? What if we were too busy to reply and forgot about it ? What if we left them on ‘seen’ because we were bored ? What if we put in such little effort that they didn’t feel like talking more ? We’re all guilty of doing one of the above. It’s important to understand that nobody will be comfortable texting you and saying t...
